exeterchessclub.org.uk — Nunn talks in his second games collection about the lot drawing at a Swedish tournament. The lots were on the bottoms of gold bars, and the players were warned that the bars were too heavy to be picked up with one hand. Nunn says that immediately after this was said, Kasparov began flexing his right hand, obviously determined to draw his lot one handed. He tried, but failed and had to use both hands. On the other hand, Portish picked up his bar one handed with no apparent strain. He may be 60, but you don't want to meet him in a dark alley. read more...

chessville.com — The recent series of Kasparov’s books My Great Predecessors has revived interest in the rich legacy of the past world champions. Wilhelm Steinitz in particular has been the subject of two CDs and a fine new edition of a Russian book (aptly titled Steinitz, The Seeker Of Truth) by Neishtadt. Steinitz was a seminal thinker and laid the foundations of positional play with his games and prolific writings. But in his younger days he was known for his romantic style and nicknamed "The Austrian Morphy". Objectively speaking, his games with White from the early years do not always make a striking impression. Feeble play of his opponents takes the joy out of many of them. read more...

chessville.com — Except in cases involving Spock or prayer, observable movements are required for people to communicate. This can be as subtle as a raised eyebrow or a whispered word, but there must be some muscle movement for one person to convey a thought or feeling to another. Note that great actors are distinguished from the rest by their extraordinary control of facial expressions, gestures, and of the movements needed to create special inflections and pronunciations when talking. It follows that an impairment that reduces a person's ability to move the muscles of the face and hands should, among other things, diminish the person's potential for self-expression. While this is generally true, the fellow pictured on the right taught himself some remarkable ways to express himself to the world, despite having severely limited muscle control. read more...
